Foster Children

CAMDOC tries to find foster support for the poorest amongst the families with children that ought to go to school. On advice from the school teachers and the head of the commune, a list of children is made who are clever but do not have a chance to learn without them and their families getting support. Since also in Cambodia the women have less chances than the men, there is a preference to support girls.

For $40 per month a family is supplied with 50 kg rice and other essential food and drinks. The package also includes soap, tooth brushes and tooth paste; instructions in basic hygiene are given. The children are given 2 uniforms and 2 pairs of shoes (slippers) each year. Furthermore they receive a little bit of pocket money and if necessary a bike to go to school. The families with children under2 years receive a chamber-pot. They are also instructed to deposit the contents and their own faeces, as much as possible on the same place, therewith avoiding widely spread surface contamination around the houses.

As per July 2011, CAMDOC supports 9 girls and 1 boy in the age between 12 and 17 years, as well as 3 families with children younger than 3 years.

All foster children visit the CAMDOC Training Center for English lessons, enabling also a basic conversation through the exchange of letters with the foster 'parents' in Europe. Of course teachers and CAMDOC staff are involved in some necessary translation. With a partner school in Austria, elementary level, where children in the same age as those in Cambodia, are tought English, a communication project is set up. With letters, photographs and may be spoken text, children at both sides will tell about their school and the day to day living.

On request of one of our supporters in Europe a very special foster group is formed with 3 families with children in the age of about 1 year old, at the time the project was started, early 2010. The reason is that the foster mother was moved by the high death rate amongst babies. Through support with hygiene products and most of all appropriate healthy food, she wants to lower the health risc for these children, and at the same time support their young parents.
